  is a great opportunity to gather\, socialize\, and learn about an excitin
 g science topic from a member of our community. No prior science knowledge
  necessary! Speakers will give a talk on their latest research or a scienc
 e topic they are passionate about\, with some time afterwards for discussi
 on or Q&A. Presentations start at 7pm – arrive early to grab a drink and g
 et a seat!\n\nPresentation: Lichens! They’re not moss...\n\nDescription: M
 any people see the bushy growths all over the trees here in WA and assume 
 MOSS! This statement may be true on the west side\, but east of the Cascad
 e crest\, much of what we see growing on trees\, and rocks\, and soil is a
 ctually lichen. Lichens are a symbiotic organism - made of a fungus and al
 gae (and maybe other things!). If you're excited to embark on a deep dive 
 into what a lichen is\, the names and terminology for all things lichen\, 
 how they reproduce\, and how they are used by people and wildlife\, come t
 o this talk! You will leave knowing why a lichen isn’t a moss (and how to 
 tell them apart)\, and all about the most common species in our area.\n\nP
 resenter: Tiffa is the Land Steward at WRI and serves as a board member of
  WNPS and NW Lichenologists. They are in love with all the flora and funga
  of NCW. They are especially interested in lichens and would love to share
  their knowledge and enthusiasm for these beautiful\, symbiotic\, communit
 y organisms. They have a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies/Biolog
 y from UC Santa Cruz with plans to start their Master’s degree at Oregon S
