Summer School Camp with Cascade School District Grades 1-8
|
This summer, WRI and Cascade School District partnered on a summer school camp! Forty-five students enrolled in Cascade School District's summer school program were invited to be a part of an afternoon camp with WRI after summer school. This program is mainly funded by a grant from School's Out Washington. The students that we serve in this program are mostly from low-income, BIPOC, and migrant families. It focuses on outdoor recreation and social connection.
This program occurred over three weeks this month, totaling 78 hours spent outside having fun with WRI (not including the summer school classroom time). Throughout this time, it's with the same students and staff members!

Kids in the Wild Grades 1-3 |
Campers learned how to fish and tie a fishing knot. They even caught a fish! Campers spent time practicing archery at the hatchery and went on a tour there. They learned about the native flora and fauna of our area, and even learned how to use a compass!
Special thanks to Trout Unlimited and Marjie and Alexis from the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery! |
| Kids in the Wild Grades 4-6 |
Campers learned how to fish and tie a fishing knot. They also spent time practicing their archery skills. Campers built their skills in using maps and compass for navigation. They also floated the Blackbird Island channel and learned more about the flora and fauna here. Special thanks to Trout Unlimited and Marjie and Alexis from the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery! |

Campers got their climb on! Campers learned basic geology and explored some of the local geological phenomena. They hiked up Mountain Home Road to look at the glacier erratic there. They also spent time climbing indoors at Riverfront Rock Gym and spent two days climbing outside up Icicle Road with Northwest Mountain School.
Special thanks to Riverfront Rock Gym and our camp partners, Northwest Mountain School! |
| Amazing Artists Grades 1-3 |
Campers embraced their artistic side and used many art media. They used watercolor to create their self portrait and then created a nature frame to display it. Campers made sun catchers out of pressed flowers and leaves, too! Guest artist, Zuly, taught campers how to paint rocks like penguins, ladybugs, and... minions! Guest artist, Katie, helped campers create an outer space marble scene. Special thanks to our guest artists, Zuly Arredondo and Katie Churchwell! |

On July 14th, construction began on our new Outdoor Classroom! Just over a month later, the space looks transformed. All that needs to be finished is the roof and putting gravel down. It's anticipated to be finished by late summer or early fall. We are excited to show you the end result and begin using the space!
This project is funded by a grant from Leavenworth Rotary with a matching grant from the District Rotary, plus Leavenworth Fund and COVID support grants. The project would not have been possible without the many hours of donated time from local architect, Alison Miller and local structural engineering firm, Morrish Design. Thank you!
