Summer Camp Kickoff!

You know summer has really begun when WRI Summer Camps start! Over the last 2 weeks, 50 students from Wenatchee came to WRI for Explorer Camp. These students just finished 2nd-5th grade, and many of them were also in WRI's After School Program.

In both of these camp sessions, students from Lewis & Clark and Lincoln Elementary schools visited WRI and Lake Wenatchee for a variety of activities. As part of a special lesson, campers worked on a trail stewardship project the trails for bikers and hikers with James Munly and Ben Harris from the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance. Your involvement in WRI supports these programs teaching children about community and ecology

Olivia

(she/her/hers)

Olivia grew up running wild on the beaches of California’s central coast. Though she adores the Pacific deeply, she’ll always choose the mountains over the sea and her heart holds a fondness for the high desert. She received a degree in Environmental Humanities at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington State. Regenerative farming and living mindfully are Olivia’s passions, and she’s stoked to be learning all about the ecosystems of Chelan County and joining in the community here. In her free time she wanders, crochets, soaks up golden hour and goes on overnight trekking adventures. A child at heart, Olivia loves being immersed in the kids’ worlds while facilitating their curiosity at camp.

Sophia

(she/her/hers)

Growing up in the Midwest, Sophia spent time outdoors learning about her local ecosystem and community through experiential education. She saw the value in learning by doing. When Sophia moved to the Wenatchee Valley she started exploring the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. In her free time she loves hiking, painting, and paddle boarding with friends. Sophia is currently a psychology student at the University of San Francisco minoring in child and youth studies. She has worked in various art and youth programs including theater classes, and while at school she works at a children’s art and STEM studio. Sophia is looking forward to sharing her love of art and spending time outdoors with the children she meets this summer. She feels that all youth should have the opportunity to explore and learn about the outdoors and have fun while doing it.

Welcome Tiffany - WRI's New Land Steward

(she/they)

Tiffany (who also goes by Tiffa) is madly in love with native plants, lichen, and fungi in general. She has a BA in Environmental Studies/Biology from UC Santa Cruz (go Banana Slugs!) with plans to start on a master's degree in mycology/botany in the coming months. Tiffa's interests include rare plants, fungi, and lichens, as well as hiking, climbing, free diving, and any form of travel that can get her to remote places to meet all of the flora, fauna, and funga that live there. She serves on the board of the Wenatchee Valley chapter of WNPS, as an alternate board member of the Northwest Lichenologists, and does extensive design work for Fungal Diversity Survey. She is also a volunteer for Rare Care, monitoring populations of rare plants around Washington State. Tiffa is so excited to be the newest land steward at WRI, with hopes to increase native plant diversity and to bring more indigenous first food plants to the WRI landscape.

We wish our former Land Steward, Sean, the best of luck as he takes on new adventures around Leavenworth.

Thank You and Farewell, Lexine

Farewell and well wishes to board member, Lexine Long as she moves on from her service at WRI. In her 5 years on the WRI Board, Lexine helped navigate the organization through COVID-19, a change in executive director, and the addition of the E. Lorene Young House to the WRI campus. She served on the DEI and Facilities committees and brought extra passion to the management of WRI's grounds. Thank you for your service and we wish you the best of luck in your next chapter, Lexine!
