Pursuing the Butterflies of Leavenworth Saturday, July 20th

Join WRI and entomologist David Droppers as we seek the colorful butterflies of the mountains surrounding Leavenworth! Using catch-and-release methods, we’ll observe butterflies up close (bring your camera!), improve our identification skills, and learn the unique life histories of each species. David will also demonstrate the many methods that Lepidopterists use to study butterflies. |

Red Barn Event: The Return of Wápupxn Thursday, August 1st

In the 1980's, wápupxn (or Canada Lynx) vanished from the landscape of northern Washington. In a collaborative effort to return wápupxn to it's ancestral lands, a team of individuals, trappers, and members of various tribes have begun implementing a five year project to bring our high mountain ecosystems back into balance. Contrary to what vampires want you to believe, some bats are actually pretty cute. Get up close and personal with these totally not vampiric flying mammals at Bat Night! Biologists from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife will be catching, collecting data, and showing us bats before releasing them. Campers entering 1st-3rd grade got to know their woodland neighbors on WRI's campus. They collected bugs, visited Lake Wenatchee, and played animal games! Leavenworth has so many different types of animals, so it's important that we learn about our neighbors and see where they live, what they do, and what they eat! |

Native Plant Garden with Cascade High School |

Thanks to funding from Washington Native Plant Society and Cascadia Conservation District, Cascade High School students worked in partnership with WRI to create a new Native Plant Garden along our trails.
Previously overrun by exotic grasses and Himalayan Blackberry, students involved themselves in every step of reclaiming this 500sq ft space. They oversaw site excavation, removed invasive species, and planted native plants of their choosing based on their importance to the ecosystem. Throughout this process, students learned the importance of native plant biodiversity, plant identification, garden design, and ecological restoration.
Upon completion, WRI staff, with support from Colville Confederated Tribes Language Department and Cascadia Conservation District, created plant signs in English, Latin, nxaʔamxčín, and Spanish. This project educates hundreds annually about native flora and Wenatchee Valley history.

Om, every Sunday morning in the WRI sunroom from 9:00am-10:30am for guided mindfulness and meditation exercises. Science corroborates the positive benefits of mindfulness for our health, happiness, work, relationships and communities. As we practice mindfulness meditation we learn to recognize and cultivates the best of who we are as human beings. Please join us, beginners and experienced meditators are welcome!
