Fall Youth Program Fun Continues

In the past two weeks, the WRI Education Team have been hard at work. They held four Field Days with 4 different classrooms of 5th grade students, visited kindergarten students at Peshastin-Dryden Elementary for two days, held After School Programming with Mission View Elementary, and resumed WRI's Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom program for the first time since the pandemic began. See some highlights below!

5th Grade Students became Lichenologists!

Fifth grade students from Alpine Lakes Elementary visited the WRI Campus for Field Days across four days (four classrooms!). They became lichenologists as they studied wolf lichen growing on ponderosa pine trees. They also played a learning game on interactions and resources with an ecosystem.

Thank you to our volunteers Tim Abel, Annette Jouard, and Tony Arkwright for making these Field Days possible!

Kindergarteners were Brave Nature Explorers!

WRI visited Kindergarten students at Peshastin-Dryden Elementary for an hour of exploring and fun across two days. They were brave explorers as they were outside and explored during heavy frost and the first snow of the season. Some of them found 'sugar' leaves from the frost! Students reviewed and learned what living, non-living, and community (human-made) things are around their school yard. They also did a scavenger hunt trying to find various nature items in their schoolyard.

Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom is Back!

WRI's Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom program is back running for the first time since the pandemic began! The WRI Education Team has begun their rounds visiting 4th and 5th grade classrooms across North Central Washington. The program began by visiting students at Orondo and Manson Elementary Schools. In their first lesson, "What is a Naturalist?", students learned about the importance of keeping a nature journal and what it means to be a naturalist. They can be naturalists by exploring and playing outside!
