Eastmont School District - Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom

Over the last 3 months, WRI's Field Educators visited 17 fourth grade classrooms in Eastmont School District. . We saw over 400 students! For our first year at Eastmont, we certainly hit the ground running. We visited each classroom once a month for a total of 3 lessons each. These lessons involved hands-on learning to teach about the natural world.

Our first lesson, Migrate, Hibernate, Tolerate introduces students to the strategies animals use to survive the cold of winter. After that, students learn about the bustling activity in the layers between snow and dirt in the Subnivean Zone lesson. They create a freestanding art piece to understand the layers in the snow. Finally, in our Fill the Bill lessons, students use the scientific method to explore how different bird bills are specifically adapted to eat certain foods.

Each of these classes also had an outdoor Field Day in addition to their classroom time. We look forward to continuing this program in the future!

Diary of a Land Steward

It’s the undisputed, undeniable, universally-known best time of year. The leaves are springing forth! Flowers! Insects! Sunshine! Wind! Pollen! My goodness folks we’ve got ourselves a full on change of seasons. Take some time to make like a leaf - face south, spread your arms, soak up the sun (Sheryl Crow?). Plant some seeds, make some biochar, let that lawn become a garden!
