The Wenatchee River Institute has always been committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. No matter the race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, lives should be treated with equality. We acknowledge that Black people in this country experience discrimination. The Wenatchee River Institute has worked very hard to reach out to immigrant communities in our education programs and will continue to do so. Thanks to your support, WRI has been able to expand its geographic reach and the diversity of students we serve. We believe that EVERYONE should have the opportunity to learn about, engage with, and develop a love and appreciation for the natural world. We all need to work hard to be more inclusive and challenge our biases.

Neat Nature Notes: Non-Green Plants

Both plants below do not have any green parts, meaning neither photosynthesize themselves! Underground they are connected with fungus through a mycorrhizal relationship. The fungus connects these non-green plants to other plants in order for them to gain carbohydrates. Water and other nutrients come from the fungus.

This plant only grows in the Pacific Northwest mountain ecosystem. It specifically relies on Matsutake mycorrhizal relationships.

Pinedrops

Pinedrops

The tallest non-green plant, it can grow over 6 feet! As its name implies, Pinedrops are linked to Ponderosa pines via fungus.
