Diary of a Land Steward

Diary of a Land Steward - Entry #5

Coppicing trees….a brief explanation: Coppicing is when you cut a certain type of tree to its base and allow it to re-sprout. This often produces several vertical shoots that can be pruned to produce easily harvestable fence posts, firewood, animal fodder, mulch, and many other uses. I’ve been experimenting with coppicing several Black Locust trees, which grow quickly, fix nitrogen in the soil, and are exceptionally rot resistant and high BTU wood. You can take a very painfully thorny tree and make it into a regenerative resource. Local... and sustainable… and ecologically beneficial?!?!? Yes!
