Traveling Naturalist

Wild Bird Program

4th Grade

As part of our Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom Program, 4th graders from Ancient Lakes Elementary and Pioneer Elementary joined us for a Field Day at WRI and Confluence State Park. Through the Wild Bird Program, 110 students learned bird songs and calls, practiced using binoculars to spot wooden birds, and explored local trails—many experiencing hiking for the very first time.

Traveling Naturalist

Earth Explorers

5th Grade

As part of our Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom Program, 5th graders from Brewster Elementary, Rock Island Elementary, and Ancient Lakes Elementary joined us for Field Days at WRI, Confluence State Park, and Lake Chelan State Park. Through the Earth Explorers program, 160 students built matchstick forest models to learn about fire ecology and created stream models to explore erosion control. They also hiked and explored local trails—an exciting first for many of them.

Thank you so much to all those who donated to make these Field Days possible this fall!

Moving Beyond Land Acknowledgement

It was exciting to see local leaders from across the Wenatchee Valley come together for the “Moving Beyond Land Acknowledgement” retreat — a meaningful step toward building relationships with Indigenous communities and moving from words into action.

Huge thank you to the Chelan Douglas Land Trust for collaborating with us to organize this retreat. Partnership and leadership are helping shift the culture of engagement in our region.

For those of us in the outdoor, nonprofit and community-building space: This is a powerful reminder that stewardship and inclusivity go hand in hand. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Thank you to the Icicle Fund for funding this retreat.

The Mushrooms are Back!

Rejoice, it’s the best time of year! These recent rains have made all these magical little organisms pop up from seemingly nowhere and they are a a pure delight. In just 1 hour I saw a huge Aspen oyster mushroom on a dead cottonwood down by the river, some fairy ring mushrooms in our new accessible pathway, red head russula in our lawn (which are spicy like radish or wasabi), and some slippery jacks under some pines (which their mycelium associates with). I just love fall and can’t wait to see what other little wonders pop up before the snow arrives.
