Please help us welcome WRI's next Executive Director...
Canuche Terranella! |
As you may know, back in August, WRI announced the planned retirement of Carolyn Griffin-Bugert, WRI's Executive Director of 4 years. Now, after a robust search and interview process, we are excited to announce the next Executive Director for WRI, Canuche Terranella!
We are beyond ecstatic to have Canuche join the team. Canuche and his family settled in Leavenworth a few years ago, and quickly became an integral part of the community. He showed his commitment to WRI early on, as a donor, advocate, parent, volunteer, and board member, always having the best interests of the organization at heart, and a dedication to our mission clearly at the fore. Not only that, but he comes to us with 10+ years of senior management experience, including deep experience in complex organizational management, people management, and strategic planning and implementation.
Canuche is exactly the collaborative, warm, human-centric leader that we sought, with the vision and skills to guide this amazing organization into its next chapter. Stay tuned for more details and a greeting from Canuche next week! |

Youth Education Highlights |
Fall is coming to an end and winter planning is here. In the last two weeks, WRI has continued our Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom Program and After School Program, and finished the trial run for our Traveling Planetarium Program in Wenatchee. Read some highlights below: |
|
|
Traveling Naturalist Classroom Visits |
WRI has continued activities in the Traveling Naturalist in the Classroom program. WRI visits 26 fourth and fifth classrooms in 5 different schools across North Central Washington each month. All classrooms have finished their third lesson in the classroom now. In their third lesson, fourth grade students were skull detectives as they identified mammal skulls by looking at structures like teeth, eye placement, and size. Fifth grades students learned about the Web of Life. They learned about how energy flows between producers, consumers, and decomposers in an ecosystem. |
|
|
WRI visits 3 Wenatchee elementary schools once per week for about 1.5 hours to deliver an After School Program. During this time, students get to play nature and field games, go outside and explore, learn more about the natural world, and connect with other students. Last week, students learned about native animals by making animals into Play-Doh and guessing the animal. They also got to look at different animal skulls and learn about how to identify if an animal is a mammal or not.

Outdoor Classroom is Complete! |
After all of the planning, coordination, and construction, WRI's Outdoor Classroom is complete! It has already been getting use with all of this winter weather. Help us celebrate its completion by joining us for a ribbon cutting next Thursday, December 8th at 11:30am. There will be hot cocoa and cookies to follow.
The Outdoor Classroom is funded by a grant from Leavenworth Rotary with a matching grant from the District Rotary, plus Leavenworth Fund and COVID support grants from the City of Leavenworth. The project would not have been possible without the many hours of donated time from local architect, Alison Miller and local structural engineering firm, Morrish Design. There was also support from local businesses, Leavenworth Electric & Excavation and Wiley Construction.
