Spring Break Camp Highlights |
Spring has sprung! A dozen students in grades K-3 joined us on the WRI campus a couple weeks ago. There were students represented from 3 different school districts, as well as homeschool! During camp, students looked at the different ways spring is "springing". Each day of camp had a theme: plants & flowers, trees, bugs, birds, and habitat. Each day, they looked for signs of each theme! Students spent 5 days exploring, learning, making nature crafts, and making new friends. |

Field Days with Sterling Middle School |
Students from Sterling Middle School in the Eastmont School District were ecosystem investigators on their visit to the WRI campus. There were over 150 seventh grade students that visited WRI over the course of 3 days last week. They explored the area and tested the health of the Wenatchee River. To do this, they looked at macroinvertebrates in the river and tested certain parameters which included dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, turbidity, nitrate, and phosphate levels. They also went on an ecosystem scavenger hunt and took a hike on the surrounding trails to learn about the area.

Composting with Winton Manufacturing |
Thank you to our local compost champion, Winton Manufacturing! Winton has introduced a new community composting program for the greater Leavenworth area. They are a local business trying to solve a couple of problems in the community by providing industrial composting, taking a waste product and turning it into a solution. Thanks to Winton, WRI is now able to compost food waste, yard waste, and other compostable materials that stem from programming with youth and adults as well as staff. This program allows us to significantly reduce our amount of garbage, and also allows an additional educational aspect. Not to mention, their investment in bear proof containers helps protect the wildlife that frequent our grounds!
In turn, Winton Manufacturing donated a truck load of compost to contribute to the E. Lorene Young Community Garden for members to use in their garden beds and for other educational purposes. Thank you for this service, Winton! |
