WRI Community Programs

Cast your vote!

As the heat of summer increases, we are looking ahead to the fall and winter to plan events, including Red Barn Events and workshops. All of our community programs serve to connect more people to the natural world by learning about a variety of topics. Topics can include anything from natural history, cultural history, science, art, and more!

We need your help! What ideas or suggestions do you have for Red Barn Events and/or workshops?

Summer Camp Madness

In the past two weeks, there have been 5 summer camps! Read some of the highlights below.

River Wild Camp

River Wild

Grades 4-6

Campers learned how to paddle-board and went kayaking and tubing along the river. Campers practiced and developed their skills and then put them to use by doing relays, balancing challenges, and scavenger hunts on the river!

Special thanks to Leavenworth Outdoor Center!

Bike & Explore Camp

Bike & Explore

Ages 6-9

Campers biked with the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance in the mornings. Campers also explored birds, bugs, beaches, and Blackbird Island. They spent the afternoon doing inflatable archery and slip 'n slide!

Cool Critters Camp

Cool Critters

Grades 1-3

Campers explored and discovered cool critters at WRI and surrounding areas. Campers collected bugs, learned about local critters, and played lots of animal games. After learning about birds, campers made bird masks and dressed up in bird costumes!

Forest Friends Camp

Forest Friends

Grades 1-3

Campers visited the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery to learn about and spot local animals and birds. They also visited Lake Wenatchee and seen the headwaters of Wenatchee River and got to play in the water. They also made forest friendship bracelets!

Amazing Artists Camp

Amazing Artists

Grades 4-6

Campers embraced their artistic side by working with watercolor, acrylics, colored pencils, pencil sketches and even a paint pour! They also learned to press flowers and leaves. Campers took a field trip to Sleeping Lady to tour the sculptures there and then did some watercolor art in the field above the Icicle River. Guest artist, Martha Flores, taught campers how to create self portraits incorporating nature. Guest artist, Katie Churchwell, helped campers create an outer space scene!

Breaking Ground at WRI

Breaking Ground

On July 14th, construction began on our new Outdoor Classroom! This structure gives a solid gathering space outdoors and provides cover for our education programs, especially during adverse weather or heat. Prior to COVID, when it got too rainy, snowy, or hot, we simply moved indoors. Now we must put up temporary tents around our campus or move indoors in small groups. This covered classroom space will allow us to continue activities outdoors no matter the weather.

The structure will measure 20' x 24' with enough space for four picnic tables (or many chairs). It is anticipated to be finished by late summer or early fall!

This project is funded by a grant from Leavenworth Rotary with a matching grant from the District Rotary, plus Leavenworth Fund and COVID support grants. The project would not have been possible without the many hours of donated time from local architect, Alison Miller and local structural engineering firm, Morrish Design. Thank you!
