Neat Nature Note

Dead Salmon

Missing Tails?

Have you noticed salmon carcasses with no tails? Those are hatchery-origin fish that had coded-wire implant tags in them for identification. They did not return to the hatcheries so various fish management agencies (USFWS, WDFW, PUD) do surveys to identify them. This helps to know how many are out intermingling with wild fish. Their goal is to remove as many hatchery fish off spawning grounds as possible. The tags are put into various body parts of the hatchery fish. They must be removed to get the unique number, a difference from PIT tags. This is why we see salmon without heads and tails!
