Leavenworth Mayoral Forum at WRI Tuesday, October 17th 6:00PM-7:30PM |
Connecting people and communities is a core part of WRI's mission. We are proud to be a gathering space welcome to all. It's for this reason that we are giving the community an opportunity to learn about how the two Leavenworth mayoral candidates want to distinguish themselves around issues that matter to our community and WRI's mission.
Want to submit questions for the candidates? WRI is accepting questions that are related to WRI's mission, including themes of climate change, fire, tourism economy, watershed health, housing, education, leadership philosophy, and wildlife. Submit questions through Sunday, October 8th at 11:59pm here.
To be more inclusive, this event will also be available via Zoom and later posted to YouTube, and free childcare will be offered during the event. If you're interested in childcare, let us know here. |

5th Graders were Earth Explorers! |
Last week, we began our school year programming with local students! Fall always brings with it more opportunities for teaching students outside. Our first group of Field Days were with 5th grade students from Alpine Lakes Elementary. They were Earth Explorers as they learned about wildfires by participating in a "match stick forest" activity. In this activity, they learned about how slope, density of trees, and moisture can affect forest fires. They learned about erosion and applied what they learned to help control erosion with an engineering challenge involving sand, water, other nature materials that students found around the area. We are looking forward to having more students visit the WRI campus this fall!

Local Plant Highlight #2 Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) |
If you’ve seen a shrub adorned in mini-snowball berries, you probably met me, the Snowberry. I'm a deciduous shrub who spreads horizontally by my roots. I grow in thickets, creating shelter and food for deer, elk, moose, antelope, grouse, robins, thrushes, bears, gophers, rabbits, bees, and more. My high saponin content makes me unpalatable and debatably toxic for humans. But my crushed berries have been used to remedy burnt skin, rashes, sores, and to clean hair and armpits. Teas can be made from my roots and twigs, and my branches can be tied together to make brooms. Want to help me spread my reach? Find an abundant patch of snowberries and have a “Snowberry Ball Fight.”
