Congratulations 5th Grade Graduates! |
Join us in celebrating Alpine Lakes 5th graders as they graduate from WRI's programming. These students spent 3+ years learning about the Wenatchee River watershed, different habitats in our region, and how to be naturalists. On their last day of programming with us they learned about and practiced basket making with Cultural Educator, Julie Edwards of the Colville Confederated Tribes, visited the planetarium, and had a small graduation ceremony on the meadow! It's been a joy to teach them over the last 3+ years and we hope they carry their naturalist knowledge with them into the future.

This spring, 3rd graders from Alpine Lakes Elementary visited WRI's campus over 4 weeks for our Wild Bird program. During their Field Day(s), students participated in a variety activities to further their understanding of birds. From using binoculars to identify wooden birds to looking at taxidermized bird specimen, each activity inspired curiosity to connect with our native bird species. For an added bit of fun, students played "Migration Mayhem" to explore the migration patterns of birds and even learned about bird calls through games. Finally, they went on a bug hunt to discover what birds eat. We can't wait to see them for 4th grade programming next year.

Being Bear Safe - Let's Work Together |
WRI was the talk of the town last week after a sneaky bear helped themselves to our community compost drop off bin. WRI's trails had to close as this visitor snoozed in a tree. We are glad to be a community compost center and educational facility with a bear resistant compost bin. Unfortunately, even bear resistant compost bins can’t work with human error. We all made a mistake and didn’t confirm the bin was latched. When the bear tipped it, it fell open. A huge thanks to Winton MFG Compost Works for responding promptly and notifying us! We can all work together to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
The bear ventured back for seconds but was unsuccessful when faced with a correctly latched bin (check out the claw scuffs on the photo above). WRI staff will be checking the compost bins at the end of each work day and we ask that our community helps us keep each other, and our woodland neighbors, safe. |
