Ice Worms Revealed – Their Ecology and Evolution
Glaciers are often thought of as cold, lifeless places. However, like virtually every ecosystem on earth, glaciers host a diversity of life forms. The glacier ice worm, native to coastal mountains from Oregon to Alaska, is the largest organism that lives its entire life cycle on glaciers. What do we know about the natural history and evolution of ice worms and their importance to glacial and surrounding ecosystems? Come and find out!
Peter Wimberger is an evolutionary and conservation biologist with diverse natural history interests. His research subjects have ranged from birds to plants, mammals, fish, mussels and ice worms. Recently retired from the University of Puget Sound and the Puget Sound Museum of Natural History, he continues doing research and museum work, but has added more fun, like travel and guiding to the mix.
