Dwarf Mistletoe Field Trip
Hosted by the Wenatchee Valley Plant Society: Join Jim Hadfield, retired forest pathologist, in exploring the complex role our native parasitic plants dwarf mistletoes, have on our forests and whether they are friend or foe. The morning outing will take place around the Bridge Creek Campground along the Icicle Creek road. Two of the Washington native dwarf mistletoe species, Douglas-fir dwarf mistletoe and ponderosa pine dwarf mistletoe, occur at this site. Jim will describe how to recognize the dwarf mistletoe and discuss infection, intensification, and spread of this native parasite. Dwarf Mistletoe infections have implications for wildfire behavior, forest management techniques and offers benefits to some species of wildlife. Wear light hiking footwear and long pants and dress for the weather (Sun!) for this moderate activity. Bring plenty of water and lunch or snacks.
